Outside Magazine first launched in 1977, its focus is on sports, outdoors, activities, politics and more. It was founded by Jann Wenner, William Randolph Hearst III, and Jack Ford – the son of the former US president. Two years later the magazine was sold to its current owner, Lawrence Burke. In estimate, Outside Magazine’s circulation is at 680,000 every month. It is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico and operated by Mariah Media. In 2010, Mariah Media together with Resorts Sports Network launched Outside Television. Its current editor is in the person of Christopher Keyes.
Through out the years, many of Outside Magazine’s readers are inclined on outside adventures and activities. Although the magazine is also a relevant source of other information besides travel and adventure. Some notable writers whose work were seen on this magazine’s pages are of E. Annie Proulx, Bob Shacochis,Daniel Coyle, Bruce Barcott, Tim Cahill and David Quammen – a well known naturalist and book author. Quammen wrote for the column Natural Acts for Outside Magazine for fifteen years. David Berkeley, a notable song writer/composer has also worked for the magazine. Outside Magazine is also known to have launched the writing careers of notable writers – Jon Krakauer and Sebastian Junger. Sebastian Junger is well known for his book The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea. While Jon Krakauer wrote mostly non-fiction books including Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, Under the Banner of Heaven, and Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman.
